Fia has been hard at work, her Matisse painting is done!. The colors are beautiful! She finished up with oil pastels and a little pixie dust...to just a few of her flowers. I have to get a good photo of the finished piece...it came out beautifully!! One of my favorite pieces.
Her next project is going to be a self portrait. Fia notices all the small details of an image so I am excited to see how she will interpret her own image working off of a photo and a mirror.

Fia has started her painting after a Matisse. 'Vase With Two Handles'. Working from her color wheel she is painting in the table top, a cadmium red. We decided it would look best to keep her charcoal line work because it adds to the overall painting. Fia also put in some of her leaves using blue, yellow and black to get various shades of green.
Its going to look great when done!

Fia just began her new painting after a Henri Matisse painting called, 'Vase with Two Handles'. She begins with a charcoal drawing on canvas paper. Once her drawing is the way she likes it she will begin her painting.
The painting is a beautiful combination of baby blues, reds and yellows. A perfect study of the primaries. I have added a boarder around the drawing just for presentation because I think it is a beautiful piece just as a drawing. Fia has a wonderful feel for the charcoal using thick and thin lines which add to the depth of the drawing.
Next week begins color!

'Rose Still'
Fia yesterday painted in her background color for her rose still. She mixed two colors which are compliments to her primary color, blue. Fia then made tints of those colors by adding white. Fia wanted a soft background base to set off her charcoal drawing. We decided that the painting is complete, not wanting to paint in the roses and loose her beautiful charcoal line work.

'Goldfish' by Chloe
This is one of my favorite pieces just completed by a very enthusiastic student. Chloe loves painting in oils and is getting better at learning how to mix and blend her own oil colors. This particular painting is after a Mattisse painting called, 'The Goldfish''.
Pretty good for an aspiring 6 year old artist!

'Roses in Red'
Fia is getting a good start on her 'Roses in Red' painting.
We started with a live still life. Fia laid in her drawing with charcoal on a canvas board. The next week since the roses faded she worked from a photo to finish her charcoal drawing. This week she will pick her color palette and begin painting the background, moving into the roses.

Elyse's Monet....which she named 2
OK....I have been a little negligent in getting the kids work up recently since David, Bud and I were so busy getting ready for our trip to Mexico, which we just returned from. I promise to follow up with some fun photos of Bud on a surf board much to his distress.
So excuse the delay but here is Elyse's completed Monet of poplar trees based after a Monet painting of the same...see to the left. Elyse did a beautiful job especially in her technique in using the paint brush and creating texture and depth. Her new piece which she just drew out on canvas is a seascape also based on a Monet.
Brett's 'Copper Gobber'...next a self-portrait!
Brett recently finished this painting which started out as a drawing and then continued into a full color oil painting. He decided to name his red cardinal......Copper Gobber.

'Stargazer Lilies' by Zoe Paoli
Zoe is setting up for a new oil painting which will be a 20"+24". First she is laying out her composition in charcoal on tissue paper. Once the composition is worked out she will transfer it onto a canvas and then start painting working out her shapes and values. She'll be working from a live still life and from photos of the lilies taken from different angles. The drawing itself came out very nice.
'Barney' portrait is complete!
Chloe has finished her first portrait, 'Barney'...of her mini lab. Done in homage to Henri Rousseu. Chloe mixed all the oil colors herself......good job for her first oil painting!

Dr. S Dessert painting
Dr. S just started this painting of a dessert scene, which is a combination of 5 different shots of the same area. The canvas is about 3'+4'. He is working from a series of photos to bring together his own vision of the area. Dr. S is working off a grid pattern from a smaller color study he did along with the photos. It will be a challenge to bring it all together. A place that exists but not exactly.
In homage to 'Poplars on the Banks of Epte, Claude Monet
Elyse is doing an oil painting after a Monet painting done in 1891. The painting is of poplar trees on a beautiful summers day. She just began to lay in the sky...learning how to variate the blues from light to dark using her brush in a cross hatch and stipple technique. Elyse really captured the colors perfectly.

Brett and Van Gogh's Cypress trees
Brett just finished his 2nd painting after Van Gogh's cypress trees. The first one at the top right was done in acrylics which he learned to mix color using water based paints. Brett was able to make both his primary and secondary colors based off of his color wheel which he made a few weeks ago.
Brett's 2nd painting below after the same Van Gogh painting, was done in oils. Brett learned how to mix color using oil colors and linseed oil, which has a completely different feel when mixing and painting.
Just a few more finishing touches and he's all done. Should make a nice gift!
Good job Brett!

Chloe's painting after Rousseau, 'Portrait of Barney'
Chloe is almost done painting her dog, Barney. Today she worked on the blue sky and the mountains. Learning how to blend oil colors in a cris cross pattern transitioning from dark to light. Learning subtle gradiation of color.
Almost done......with a little magic pixy dust thrown in for the flowers of Spring.
